Presentations by MedPAC staff at the 2025 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting

Earlier this month, several MedPAC staff participated in the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting in Minneapolis, MN. Participation in the conference helps MedPAC engage with the broader research community and keep abreast of the latest research in the health policy field. Staff also presented some of MedPAC’s work at the conference as part of the Commission’s effort to make its work transparent and available to the public.

Five analysts presented work that the Commission has discussed and published recently:

  • Betty Fout presented an analysis entitled “Examining Medicare Advantage Enrollees’ Home Health Utilization” at the Medicare poster session. The abstract can be found on the conference website here and the poster can be found on MedPAC’s website here. The Commission discussed this analysis at MedPAC’s October 2024 and March 2025 public meetings, and it was published in the June 2025 report to the Congress.
  • Stuart Hammond presented an analysis entitled “Assessing the Utility of Medicare Advantage (MA) Encounter Data for Analyzing the Use of Supplemental Benefits” at the Medicare poster session. The abstract can be found on the conference website here and the poster can be found on MedPAC’s website here. The Commission discussed this analysis at MedPAC’s October 2024 and April 2025 public meetings, and it was published in the June 2025 report to the Congress.
  • Andy Johnson presented an analysis entitled “How Do Differences in Diagnostic Coding Intensity Affect Payments to Medicare Advantage Plans and Stand-Alone Prescription Drug Plans for Part D Benefits?” in the session “Medicare Advantage Enrollment, Payment, and Networks.” The abstract can be found on the conference website here and the presentation can be found on MedPAC’s website here. The Commission discussed this analysis at MedPAC’s April 2025 public meeting, and it was published in the June 2025 report to the Congress.
  • Katelyn Smalley presented an analysis entitled “The Use of Prior Authorization in Medicare Advantage, 2021–2023” at the Medicare poster session. The Commission discussed this analysis at MedPAC’s November 2023 public meeting, and it was published in the June 2024 report to the Congress.
  • Jeff Stensland presented an analysis entitled “The Effect of Medicare Advantage on Hospital Profitability” at the Medicare poster session.
